Behind the Lens with Rachel

I’ve like to welcome Rachel, the creative force behind Rachel Dowd Photography, may call Arizona home, but her Colorado roots run deep. Whether she’s here capturing love stories or spending time with family, she always finds her way back to the mountains. Her photography blends warmth, authenticity, and a deep appreciation for the in-between moments that make each wedding unforgettable.

In this interview, she shares her journey, her approach to wedding photography, and what inspires her behind the lens.

It is a true pleasure and joy working with Rachel on weddings and I’m delighted to feature her and introduce her great body of work to you!

Can you share a bit about yourself? How did you get started in wedding photography?

I started photographing weddings in 2016. I had a family member that was getting married, and costs were adding up quick. I suggested that if she bought me my first camera, I would spend the summer learning how to photograph weddings and I would photograph hers – and that was that.

What do you love most about photographing weddings?

I love learning people’s love stories and what makes them unique. There is also this magic about finding someone and wanting to spend your life with them and pledging that… I love getting to document that.

What’s your favorite part of working with couples on their wedding day?

Getting to do portraits immediately after the ceremony is the best because the emotion is still so raw from the ceremony, so the pictures always turn out beautiful

What advice would you give to couples who are choosing their wedding photographers?

Make sure you vibe and mesh well. The photo and photo style is important, but finding someone who you connect with makes everything even better.

What’s the most unexpected or funny thing you’ve experienced while photographing a wedding?

I love wedding photo bloopers and sending them to my couples. Lol

Why do you think having a second photographer is beneficial for couples?

For weddings of 100 guests or more, or if the bride and groom are getting ready in separate areas, a 2nd shooter is a must. It helps make sure you have full coverage of the day, and no moments are missed.

What inspires you most about capturing love stories?

Their stories and capturing the start of a new family tree.

Some of Her Work

What’s one thing you wish every couple knew about wedding photography?
